I was hoping to use next lesson (14th) to give you feedback on your comparative coursework pieces in order for you to have the opportunity to redraft them over the Christmas holiday. This will not be possible if you do not hand this coursework in.
Don't bury your head in the sand; get on with it!
If you can't find me at school, please send me an email attaching your draft.
The advisor has now approved the titles we constructed on Monday - hooray! I've typed them out below (the blog won't let me paste!) so that those of you who have not yet decided on a title will see the kinds of task expected.
1) In the light of your reading on aesthetics and value, write a Guardian-style review of Stephanie Myers' Twilight (or John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) arguing that it should be considered as part of the literary canon.
2) In the light of your reading on gender theory, discuss the extent to which Tennyson's Lady of Shallot reinforces or challenges gender stereotypes.
3) In the light of your reading on 'Beauty and Aesthetics in Literature', discuss the extent to which Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone can be considered as deserving of canonical status.
4) To what extent does Browning's My Last Duchess (or Ibsen's Hedda Gabler) reinforce or challenge the stereotypes identified by Bertens?
5) It has been said that 'quality residing within texts...such as complexity, aesthetic unity, literary language [and] subject matter [contribute to] canonical status.' How far is this applicable to Morpurgo's Private Peaceful?
6) In the light of your reading of the critical anthology, how far is it possible to apply feminist readings to My Last Duchess?
7) In the light of your reading of the critical anthology, how far is it possible to apply Marxist readings to Hosseini's The Kite Runner (or Wilfred Owen's Dulce et Decorum Est)?
8) To what extent does the application of gender theory to Roy's The God of Small Things enhance the reader's appreciation of the text?
9) 'Literary texts assumed to be of special value are generally characterized by complexity of structure, plot, language and ideas.' To what extent does text X show these qualities?
